Night Blade Colbana Files Volume 2 J C Daniels 9780615778068 Books
Is it bad that I don't always like angst in my readings? I'm not one to choose a book because it will put me through the wringer, emotionally. In fact, I tend to shy away from those types of stories. So why am I so drawn to J.C. Daniels, aka Shiloh Walker, novels? Ah, that's easy. It's the writing. She sucks you in, and it's like potato chips. You can't read just one.I'd been putting of reading this series due to my innate dislike of (almost) all things UF. But I really like this author's work. It was a conundrum. Until Night Blade went on sale, and I can't read the second book first, and then....here we are. I am now completely invested in this series. I read Blade Song yesterday, immediately started Night Blade, and finished it this morning. Still trying to process it all. What I do know is Kit is amazing, and Damon is...poor Damon.
Very Brief Synopsis - An ex-boyfriend of Kit's forces her to work for Banner, the UH police force, to try to save Damon from a death warrant. Kit can't tell Damon. (She's been bespelled- she CAN'T tell anyone) So Kit solves the mystery, but Jude kidnaps her and Very Bad Things happen to Kit.
What worked - So much, and very little, all at the same time. *sigh* Heartbreaking things happen. I do not want to spoil anyone. But strong, amazing Kit may have reached her breaking point. The whole time I was reading the second half of the book, I kept having to stop and regroup. Heart. Breaking. That said, I have faith in this author, and I know things will work out the way they are supposed to. Which may not be the way I think they should, but that's okay. The writing is stellar. I felt like I was there with Kit. While the bad physical things were not graphic, the emotional pain Kit suffered was very graphic. Damon's horror and grief were gut level real. The reactions of Kit's friends and associates were true to life, and believable.
What didn't work - Very little, and so much, all at the same time. Seeing a character you have become invested in being tortured is not easy or fun. Knowing it will only make Kit a stronger person going forward helps a little.
This was not the easiest book for me to read. It didn't tie up with a happy bow at the end. But it was so freaking good.
Bottom line - Time and money extremely well spent. Waiting for the next book in the series is its own personal kind of torture.

Night Blade Colbana Files Volume 2 J C Daniels 9780615778068 Books Reviews
I'm not a professional reviewer, just a happy reader. I enjoyed this book just as much as the first (Blade Song). I've noticed a trend in the Urban Fantasy books I normally read where the heroines of the story are tough, strong-minded, kick-ass women who generally triumph over whatever adversity comes their way. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE each and every one of those characters. However, JC Daniels puts a different spin on her heroine which I thoroughly enjoy. Kit Colbana is a tough woman but with a bit of an emotional handicap which is due a rather ugly upbringing. I find it interesting to see how Kit works through her issues amidst all of the action. It is hard to give examples without providing spoilers so I will simply say that this book forces Kit to face her vulnerabilies head on. Night Blade also continues Kit's relationship with Damon, which is put to the test in a big way. I am not a professional critic or even a writer so I do not feel qualified to offer any criticism. But as a reader, I confess to having struggled a bit since Blade Song (Bk 1) with this relationship btwn Kit and Damon. I felt that there were some gaps in how they became a couple and how their relationship is conveyed to the reader. There is a lot of action and it is far stronger than the Kit/Damon relationship aspect of this series. Because of this, the relationship doesn't "feel right" (lacks chemistry?). I am hoping the next book can either bring them together fully or maybe put Damon in the background as Kit "evolves". Despite my concern, I love this series and look forward to the next )
Part of me thinks I need to read through these again before I put up a review because my brain just won't simmer down. So I'll just explain my review title and keep spoilers to nil.
Wow. There is so much potential here for an incredible UF series with a kick-ass heroine and a to-die-for significant other. I am reminded of Kate Daniels, but J.C. Daniels has a lot of work ahead of her if she wants to be as good as Ilona Andrews. I need to emphasize this point I am reminded, but it is not the same. Different world building, different realities, different relationships between magic users, weres, and vampires. This is book 2 of the series, and if you're surprised about anything that happened, then you weren't paying attention. J.C. has a gift of writing characters, creating a gut-wrenching conflict for the heroine without resorting to graphic descriptions. I'm not bothered by details, but when an author can pull you deep into a story, it is so much WORSE if there are none. Details are the easy way out--nothing left to the imagination, and so shocking it can pull you out of the story.
Hmmm. Why are people always shocked and surprised when violence appears in an UF story? The use of it is not for the sake of it. Ever heard the saying, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger"? There isn't any waste in the story. But the violence was necessary here and if you read it, know there is hope at the end. If you're feeling gut-wrenching heartbreak for Kit, then know that J.C. is doing her job, and is doing it very well.
Grrrrrr. J.C. needs to brush up on her grammar, enlist the help of better beta readers, and get a hell of a better editor. If you have a team of people around you, there is literally NO excuse for a lousy manuscript. Missing words, wrong word use, drops in the narrative, inconsistencies across books, and plot pitfalls evaded by cop-outs. I'm being harsh, but come on. Either her helpers are defunct, or she doesn't care enough to put out her best work. This series has so much potential to be incredible, but it has a long way to go. Don't get me wrong the story is good, and if you have half an imagination you'll be emotionally invested in Kit. But as good as it is, it can be better.
