I know I can just buy these for my hubby and he LOVES the whole series AND so do I! Just an amazing and enjoyable read! Both my husband and I enjoy the action and storytelling. My husband especially loves the attention to detail only an ex-military person can bring to the action. I support and applaud this author! I love to give my husband books as gifts and needed just one more author to round out the ones he loves - Stephen King, Taylor Anderson (Destroyermen series) and DJ Molles (The Remaining Series sadly a very short list of these)....and, now, John O'Brien's A New World Series. Hubby is absolutely RIVETED and actually comes to me before he's even done to remind me to order the next ones. I JUST ordered volumes 8, 9, 10 & 'Untold Stories' !!! ABSOLUTELY thrilled both for my own reading enjoyment, but, especially happy my hubby loves them so much and I can just order without a second thought :) Keep up the amazing work!

The title says it, and so too many previous reviewers, so I won't go into that. The strengths are almost non-stop action, and the author lapsing into philosophical meanderings and musings, while a bit long and diverting from the action, are interesting food for thought.

A weakness in the narrative was his continual detailed descriptions of copious amounts of blood and gore from the ex-human "night runners," and human bad guys, again and again, as though he has a obsession with these descriptions. Vivid, apparently for the readers who are gore-y seekers (pun intended).

A few notes author has the M-240 machine gun firing 7.62mm bullets--is is 5.56mm. The Blackhawk helicopter has wheels, not skids.

Diagrams showing a graphic description of the buildings and areas, along with the written descriptions, would have been nice to allow the reader to better visualize the action.

Finally, the author treats the humanoid "night runners" as just flesh eating predators, with no mention of their previously being regular people before their mistake in taking an untested flu vaccine that turned them into the creatures they become. Interesting how the author gives them telepathic ability, like some birds and fish seem to have.

All in all, a great read. Waiting for the next one.
Ok if you have not read the first four books, then stop reading this and take yourself to John's page and get them. You will need them to be able to understand the story and to appreciate his growth as an author.

Awakening is another solid installment to The New World series. It provides plenty of action and horror too keep any zombie genre fan happy. As with the other books we get to watch Jack and his followers continue to deal not only with finding new allies but adding more enemies as well. This series has several characters, major to minor, and we get more insight into some of them in this book. It is nice to see more families can be brought back together.The main villain, the night runners, is not content to be set aside for human foes, their threat is still huge and it is getting worse.

I really enjoy these books each one gets better and O'Brien's writing keeps getting stronger. I hope he has several more in his mind.

I like how Jack's enhanced senses are growing it will be cool too see just how far up the evolutionary ladder he climbs.
HALO Jump at night with night runners everywhere! Jack has a serious set to even think about trying this but then carrying it out, I am surprised the chute held.

As fan of the survivalist, post-apocalyptic world genre this book got me hook, line and sinker!

This is an exciting adventure with true emotions and realistic abilities. This book is action packed while giving you an in depth view to this new world, trust me, it will leave you dying for the next book! Once you get into Jack Walker's world, you don't want to leave!

The story is based in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest. The enemy is now fellow Americans who are no longer completely human. A flu epidemic with casualties out of control,similar to the black plague but worse, only this time a vaccine is developed on the fly to combat the virus, it is quickly distributed to the population after being fast tracked through the FDA. Turns out... although the vaccine does keep some odd 30% alive it changes their DNA and they become...Night Runners. At the end of first wave of death due to the flu and subsequent vaccines, as society collapses and millions die, a mere 1% of humans survive.

The group of survivors this book follows is led by Jack Walker, former Captain in the Air Force and father of three. Initially I was hesitate about the children but they became one of my favorite parts of the story as this is the first book that I have read that followed the adaptation of different aged kids to this new world. Jack is a complex man who is both loving father, gentle lover, respected leader and skilled killer. He has many tools in his arsenal from past experience when he was in the military.

You follow Jack and his children through day to day life in this new world. Every adventure is well written, and I would like to say thank you to the author for his time in the military, it is obvious from the level of detail that he has been in many "sporty", as Jack would say, situations! You really feel like you are there watching these Night Runners get shot up, he takes you through the entire flight of the bullet. I really enjoyed his no BS attitude too. He is a great leader who is intelligent, caring, and strong, the best you could ask for in this situation.

I recommend starting at the first book, once you do you won't stop until you finish Dissension. I think it took my about 2 weeks to read all 6 of them.
