The Thirteenth Princess eBook Nina Clare

Let me begin by saying that I loved fairy tales as a child. I still like fairy tales and even some retellings of fairy tales like those by Robin McKinley. This is the first book that I have read by Nina Clare, but it appears that she has written several books based on fairy tales. Since it is a retelling, it would be unfair to criticize it for not being creative, but it would have been nice to see more of an improvement on the original. She begins with the Twelve Dancing Princesses and then adds a thirteenth princess as heroine and story teller. (She isn’t telling the story to you as the reader but to the Chronicler, which does create some separation between the reader and the story. To its detriment.) The story is a classic with enchantments, romance, good, evil, and bravery. In the original version, the prince risked death. In this version, those who fail merely get shooed out the back door. In the context of this retelling, that change was necessary to avoid casting a shadow on both our heroine and her fairy godmother. This retelling was not as charming as I had hoped. There is nothing wrong with it, although the pacing was slow. Honestly, it would have been difficult to make all of the individual stones, banquets, engagements, and awakenings for the 13 princesses less of a slog. And, also to be fair, she needed that narrative to fill enough pages to let the story stand alone as a book. This book is light, easily read, and unobjectionable. It is best suited to younger readers. Many young adult stories have enough dimension in the plot and characters to also satisfy an adult reader. It did not captivate me.

The Thirteenth Princess eBook Nina Clare Reviews

I think this should replace the regular version of the story for young, and young at heart, readers. Save the regular version for reference and research, but enjoy this one for an updated, more gender-balanced romance.
I love fairy tales and unique retellings. Nina Clare has created a wonderful tale incorporating a thirteenth princess in the 12 dancing princesses. I loved the first person view and the princess' spunky personality. I could not put this book down til the spell was broken. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great read!
Quite a fascinating retell of the tale of the Dancing Princesses. A must read. Love the twists and turns throughout the story. Nina Clare has written a great tale, lacking in the "perfect symmetry" which of course, makes the story all the better!
I received a copy of this book through Scout and I am glad I voted for it.
This was a retelling of The 12 dancing princesses. I enjoyed the story, though I felt it was slow at times. I found it heartwarming and slightly suspenseful in parts. The writing was well done from the prospective of the thirteenth princess who is usually not written about. From her point of view, we are shown castle life with a self absorbed Uncle, and his schemes, due to the unfortunate death of their parents. I would recommend this for middle school students, they will need help with some of the vocabulary, and beyond. Nice rendition!
I have never read anything from this author before but after finishing The Thirteenth Princess I will definitely be looking into more from her. This was a fun spin on the 12 Dancing Princesses tale, with a large cast of characters that the author manages to balance well. I was a bit nervous going in that I would be overwhelmed with so many princesses and characters to keep track of but the way Nina Clare writes it I was never confused or lost.
(Review coming from the wife. My husband does not read fairy tales. LOL!)
This is light reading, which I enjoyed this retelling of a classic fairy tale, told from the perspective of a thirteenth princess that was forgotten and overlooked. The author has cleverly told us what "really" happened. I enjoyed the details given to each gem that related to the names of each of the princesses and their princes. Just a fun easy read.
The Thirteenth Princess wasn't what I expected. It's not a book with a lot of travel. In fact, only a few locations are featured. There's not a ton of action. The plot is mostly quite predictable, and the majority of the twists are ones that readers will see half a book before they occur. And if you're like me, you'll almost be screaming at the main characters, telling them they're daft for not seeing the obvious.

Yet despite not having much action and being a slightly slow story, the characters were interesting and the story is too. It's a quick story to read and there's some cleverly written sections. There's a certain indefinable quality about this story. Listing it's strengths and flaws doesn't quite capture how good a story it was. Despite not having much action, despite being predictable, despite all its flaws ... it just works. This story is truly greater than the sum of its parts.
